Our Green Article for this week:

When one normally thinks about ‘greening’ the working cubicle (hopefully you have a big one), thoughts about paper recycling and not wasting electricity are foremost.   However, one of the most easiest ways to help yourself onto the green path for the first time . . . is your lunch.

For office workers, lunchtime is perhaps the day’s most welcome break and it can help the environment in simply, tasty ways.   While it may be more convenient  or more popular to buy from the office cafeteria or the fish ‘n chips store around the corner, today’s packaging hardly qualifies as ‘green’.   Think of the Styrofoam used for office cups or the take-away lunch and the plastic bag to carry it all in!

If there is a coffee machine in the office, bring your own cup.   It doesn't matter that Garfield sits on your ceramic cup, if it is reusable, which means that you are drinking ‘green’.   Well done!  The same goes for cool drink consumption, your own glass will prevent a mountain of un-degradable Styrofoam and plastic cups at the end of each year.   Just a small change in your everyday way of doing things can have a huge positive impact on the environment.

Bring a homemade lunch, even if it was last night’s bolognaise.   It doesn't necessarily have to be diet or healthy food,   just something that doesn't come with paper, plastic or foil.   The container should also be reusable.   School kids do this all the time, barring the ones hanging around the cafeteria everyday (the future Un-Greenies!).

There is so many different environment - friendly ways of packaging your lunch in better ways than just buying and throwing away everything.  Yes,  it is soooooo convenient,  especially in today`s running, always -  chasing -  the -  clock -  society,  but what good does it do anyone of us to make stacks of money and be so very successful at everything we do, but we leave our children and children’s children with a planet that is literally falling apart.  Not to talk about the poor animals and trees that does not have a clue what is going on anyway!   We leave them with the unpleasant responsibility of trying to save what is left of what we, the previous generations destroyed and left them with, because we are too busy to pack a lunch and quickly wash a lunchbox!   Where is the fun in that for them?

Something small like just using a reusable lunch package and reusing a cup or glass at work can do the worlds good!  You do not have to do anything more than that if you don`t feel like it. Such a small change! Just because we do not see immediate effects once you start sipping coffee from your ceramic cup (skies opening up in a splendid baby blue and lushes green grass sprouting under your feet and from every corner of the office) we think it does not help a thing!  It is never going to be such a way that you can see anything happening once you start making changes; nothing will look or seem different, ever.  The big thing is – things ARE getting better for the environment and you are doing YOUR part, as small as it is, as insignificant as it may seem to you (and it is not insignificant!) you are doing something to help with the minimizing of destroying nature and our planet!  Do even a little bit more by inspiring co-workers, family and friends to do the same!

Fact:

Styrofoam is expanded Polystyrene beads.  Polystyrene does not biodegrade for literally hundreds of years!  What`s worse is that the elements of Nature degrades Polystyrene to toxic components which has a negative impact on the environment.  Not only the Earth`s soil but also our Marine life.
